We meet on the second and last Thursday of every month, from 13:30 onwards in the Clubhouse.
We play the American version of the ancient Chinese game, played with tiles and newcomers are very welcome. No experience is necessary as teaching is provided.
History of the game
Mah Jongg is an ancient Chinese game played with tiles. To this day, Mah Jongg remains the most popular game in the Orient. There are several versions of Mah Jongg, but each fall under two broad categories. The American Mah Jongg and the Chinese Mah Jongg.
The Chinese Mah Jongg remains a rummy like game.
The American Mah Jongg differs as:
- it uses a card of standard hands, which is changed annually
- it uses more tiles, notably the Jokers, used to complete quints
- and, the game starts with passing unwanted tiles.
This game keeps the mind active with hands of endless variations and possibilities. A small amount of time and your patience in mastering the game will be repaid many times by the keen enjoyment invariably derived from the game.
It is a non profit making group. There is no annual or joining fee. A small charge on the day goes towards new Mah Jongg sets and refreshments.
